How long were tom and becky in the cave

What is the outcome? Tom and Becky play hide-and-seek games with the other children before growing weary and wandering off through the cave, reading the names and messages inscribed on the limestone walls with candle smoke.

After smoking their own names into the wall, Tom comes across a narrow passageway leading downwards, and they wind down the newfound path into the depths of the cave, making smoke marks once in a while for future guidance. Shortly, they come to an enclosure where thousands of bats hang from the ceiling; quickly running to escape the creatures, Tom and Becky run wildly into random "corridors" and passageways, keeping no track of which they've turned.

Finally, the two children outrun the bats and stop to rest. Despair sets in for a while. They then hear the voices of rescuers and call in reply. The search parties do not hear them, and the children find their way blocked by crevices and pitfalls. The voices grow fainter and eventually cease. The children grope their way to a spring and sit down, knowing they will soon run out of candles.

Study Guide. By Mark Twain. Previous Next. Chapter 31 So, we go back now to see what Tom and Becky have been up to for the past three days; we already know about the graffiti and their being lost and all that, but here's how it happens: Tom happens upon a little waterfall in the cave, and figures out that, just behind the water, lies a passage leading down deeper into the cave.

He takes Becky along with him into the newly discovered area. They enter a big cavern with stalactites hanging from the ceiling, find a spring covered with crystals, big columns made up of stalactites and stalagmites joined together. Out of nowhere, they're swarmed by a bunch of bats; Tom manages to get himself, and Becky, into the safety of another corridor, but the kids have to keep running from the creatures.

Having eluded the bats, they find themselves in a cavern with a big underground lake, so big that they can't see from one end to another in the darkness. In contrast to his youthful behavior earlier, he now conducts himself in a mature and truly admirable manner. Our esteem for Tom grows still further when we see his reaction to learning that Injun Joe has been trapped in the cave. While he has dreaded and feared Injun Joe and even though he recognizes the evil within Joe, Tom's reaction is one of horror when he discovers that another person, even the despicable Injun Joe, is trapped as he and Becky had been trapped.

Likewise, Becky rises in our estimation. She had earlier been seen as a petulant, spoiled, somewhat selfish girl, and she had allowed Tom to take her punishment. Now she refuses to blame Tom for their situation and shares in the blame. She does not question Tom's judgments, and she faces her death calmly.
