Why do betta fish hide in plants
When you first introduce any pet to a new area, it is normal for them to get a little nervous. Especially if you are just introducing your betta to its new forever home, it is fine for them to take some time to adjust.
There are a few steps you can take to help your betta adjust with less stress. Be sure to acclimate them to their new water. If they are coming from a previous owner or breeder, you can take minutes to acclimate them. You will need some airline tubing, or something similar. This will quickly adjust a betta to the new water hardness, temperature, and other parameters, and will reduce the shock of simply plopping them in their new tank. You should only have to do this once or twice for a complete acclimation.
Do not put the old water in the new tank. Once you have done this, gently net them and release them into their new home. However, if nothing has changed not even nearby vibrations and your betta starts hiding, this is not a normal sign, and will be discussed in more detail later.
When setting up your tank for your betta fish, you will need to have some decorations that your betta can hide behind and feel safe. In addition, a bare tank is bad for the mental health of a betta, as they need some form of mental stimulation. If you put your betta in a bare tank, it is going to have a very bad time. They simply need something else in the tank that they can interact with or simply be able to swim around.
The other option is to get a 5g tank if you choose to keep both the Betta and the Snail. According to "aqadvisor. Your plant might be turning yellow do to lack of fertilizer.
Try turning the light off and see if the Betta comes out of hiding. I turned it off and he immediately came out from under the plant and swam up to me.. So do I need to look a new light and possibly new filter? I got some anubias because I was told it's a beginner plant and shouldn't need ferts. I suppose if that's the cause I'll have to buy ferts too..
Does the light appear to put off heat that might be uncomfortable to him? I have Anubias Nana in my Betta tanks and don't use any special lighting. I use a multicolor LED strip and my Anubias is beautifully green. I do use Flourish Tabs as a fertilizer plus I use Flourish Excel because one of my Anubias isn't planted in the substrate, it's attached to a Mopani log so the roots are floating in the water.
No, i have a thermometer and the water temp has not risen from the light. Maybe it's just too bright for him??? Either way, I've turned the light off and he seems very grateful, back to swimming all over the tank.
I do think I will be investing in some fertilizer and a filter. I thought it just wasn't getting enough light. Can you see the slight discoloration spot on the edge of the top leaf? Also my betta out and about lol. I'm so glad it was something easy to fix. I am only doing partial water changes now, but I was doing full tank changes originally. I also changed the filter cartridge every 2 weeks, but read that they should only be changed weeks.
Perhaps I need to give the tank time to readjust and see how he does. Thanks for your input. Not sure if it is a carbon filter , it doesn't say on the package. Its a fibery nylon cartridge that has something dark inside. Sorry, nothing on the label. I was probably over cleaning rather than under. The dark stuff, if I took a guess, is probably activated carbon. You say you have a live plant? Activated carbon takes nutrients out of the water that plants need to grow healthy.
There are 3 main types of filtration. First, biological your beneficial bacteria , next mechanical filter pads , and chemical activated carbon.
It would be a good idea to become more familiar with these processes. You are using dip test strips? It uses scientific vials you add aquarium water too and add a solution to get a test result. I use and swear by it, it's accurate. The test strips are not always reliable. Also, instead of stress coat, use Prime. It is of much better quality and produces way better results.
I hope this helps some. Welcome to Fishlore! I believe your problem is changing the filter cartridge. The filter media is what carries most beneficial bacteria the stuff that keeps your tank's parameters in check. By removing the filter cartridge, you're just making your cycle relapse also known as a minI cycle. This relapse will cause ammonia spikes in your aquarium. Sadly test strips are highly inaccurate and give false results.
I would recommend getting a liquid test kit to accurately test your water. I would also recommend to start doing daily partial water changes to keep your ammonia and nitrite down below. Well today has been a good day. King is swimming at the top of his tank. He ate 3 pellets this morning from the top of the tank. When I got home, I went to check on him and he is again swimming at the top of the tank, he has made a huge bubble nest , which I haven't seen him do in weeks and he ate 2 more pellets at the top of his tank again.
He came right to the front of the tank to greet me with his fins flipping. I am not going to replace any of the items that I took out of his tank for a while, I will leave everything status quo for now. I don't want to stress him again. I will go to the pet store this weekend and have his water tested, get some Prime and a liquid test kit.
