Why reach the campus
This is what campus ministry is like. You have to gather your people. As our mindset shifts, we have to learn to be missionaries in our own culture. Specifically, we need campus missionaries, men and women who go to the campus to start something new.
We need more ministries on college campuses. I can think of at least three reasons why…. Thousands and thousands of students are on university campuses around the U. That alone should move us to action. When you consider the prevalence of drug and alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, and even loneliness and depression, you realize the college campus is a dark place in need of the light. That should move us to action.
There are roughly C of C campus ministries…in the entire nation! In this special expanded article, Paul Worcester shares some of the best practices for a local summer training project.
There are many options for what your collegiate ministry could focus My wife on the other hand, would experience the full spectrum of emotions and changes accompanied by But focusing on a smaller part of the campus can be more manageable. Longevity Reaching students on the college campus is not an easy task.
Students live with pressures and distractions from work, classes, social media and the freedom to explore who they are. A church needs to know that it will take time and patience on its part to enter into the college culture to make a difference.
Churches need to think long-term in their planning and have the commitment to keep pressing into the campus even when it may seem fruitless. Partnership Sometimes a missionary or church needs a partner to help start or strengthen a mission work. Getting data, ideas and demographics from an outside source can help save frustration and fruitless hours. Being connected to others working on a similar mission can be encouraging and helpful. This is where the Collegiate Partnerships team can assist churches.
The Collegiate Partnerships team partners with churches by helping them: understand their local college context; find a model of ministry that is right for them; find and utilize collegiate resources; and network with other churches doing collegiate ministry. Our team is excited about helping churches reach college students. We would love to assist in creating a strategy to reach college students in your context. Those ideas and values become preserved for decades through legislation, education, music, movies, literature, and media.
Since they have few obligations, students have few limitations to following Christ and serving him boldly. Moms, dads, brothers, and sisters are often impacted by the stories from students who return home with a changed life. The New Testament pattern of church growth showed entire families turning to Christ. One weekend home visit from a student transformed by the gospel can start a spiritual chain reaction that impacts every member of their family. In other words, we should anticipate and hope for an enormous awakening in the younger generations of the world.
We have to be prepared to handle this abundance by sending missionaries who are equipped and empowered to make disciples to colleges and high schools. My hope is to see a movement of multiplying disciples who love God, one another, and the world. The campus is a strategic place as the future leaders of our world are most open to Jesus and spiritual transformation.
